What Does Graphic Design Mean to You
What does being a Graphic Designer mean to me?
Power to create? Actually, a lot more than that…
What people usually think and believe about designers is that we are 'creative'. They think we have the capabilities to use our brain in a more logical, more functional and thus, a creative manner. Also, according to them, we have everything creatively stored inside our tiny brain. That's the biggest and the only difference they can make between them and a designer. But, is that all? I mean is that what it really is?
Definitely not! Being a de s igner is a lot more than just being simply 'creative'. Actually, no. That is also not the point here. The real point is to understand the word 'creative' itself. What does 'BEING CREATIVE' mean?
Well, to me it simply means 'being crazy'. Everybody is passionate about something. Everybody has dreams and goals to achieve. Everybody has a unique perception of their own. The only difference between them and us is that we are a bit crazier. Crazy about everything around us. Our perception of the world is madly defined by design elements and principles. We visualize things in the form of lines, dots, and shapes, demarcated in balance, rhythm, layout, etc. That's where we are different and that's how we are fervent.
Honestly, designing is also about making people believe in your craziness , and earning their respect, and faith. Unlike everyone else, we do this through the art of visual communication. I am a graphic designer and my professional career is all about communicating ones' beliefs to the world with an aspiration of making them understand and believe in the beliefs of the latter. It's just a game of varying perceptions. When we see something that we ourself would have not thought of or imagined, we find it creative/different/out of the box. Where does this imagination come from? This is where our craziness is at work! It makes us observe things differently.
Let me tell you something interesting. On the very first day of my college, the first interaction with the faculty was all about observation and perception. After entering the classroom, we were asked to imagine as we have been given the 'Design Goggles'. We were told that from now onwards, this is the gift that is going to stay with us for the lifetime. We were taught the meaning of this observation and the difference between this new world of design and the old one. That day and these goggles are one of the best things happened to me. I feel as if I have this power to create and shape my imagination and visualization, and trust me, it's truly amazing.
Also, do you know that 'Designers create for the world and not just themselves'? So, let's redefine this power…
"Designers have the Power to Understand Individual Minds and Create Interesting Communication by shaping their crazy imagination with the latter"
Well, this is something I truly believe in. Since the day I stepped into this world of expressing craziness, I have learned so much about observing people, visualising worlds, creating stuffs, capturing moments, understanding pictures, understanding layouts, practicing hobbies, learning the art of typography, hardworking, smart working, understanding target audience, marketing communications, design principles, and various other beautiful subjects. It's all so challenging and yet so engaging. Every day is a new encounter as you struggle with your imagination and practicality.
This is how I am growing. It's difficult and full of challenges but this is how I have always wanted my life to be. I am enjoying these daily doings; fighting with my thoughts for a better result, understanding phenomenon for a better thought process, and practicing art for improvement. It's so much fun that I am never satisfied with my designs. I always find a way of improvement and I love analyzing this.
My senior once told me, "Until and unless you know where to stop your design process, never stop practicing and improving. Never stop learning. Never stop observing. Never stop analyzing yourself and your design. That's how you are going to grow".
Those words changed me. They made me face the reality and fight for myself. Today, it's been 6 months past my graduation, and I am pursuing my career in Graphic designing. This is my very first job in this field and I am relishing it like anything. I have a lot of room to grow and this is where I have decided to start and take a step towards the ladder to reach the pinnacle of my dreams. I choose to challenge, work smart, work new, learn, capture and design. These are my choices.
This is how we designers operate and this is what being a Graphic Designer means to me!
